ATSA Changemaker: Dr. Stacey Benson

Benson changemaker

Dr. Stacey Benson Uses Media to Support Community Understanding

We’re proud to highlight the impact of Dr. Stacey Benson, a forensic psychologist with over 30 years of experience and a leader at STAND (Sex Offender Treatment and Assessment of North Dakota).

When STAND faced local opposition to moving into a nearby commercial area, Dr. Benson addressed the concerns head-on by joining the Jay Thomas Show, a popular local radio program. She used that platform and many others to explain STAND’s mission and the broader goals of ATSA, helping the public better understand the importance of treatment and prevention-focused work.

Dr. Benson’s thoughtful response helped shift the conversation from fear to understanding, showing how clear communication can strengthen community support.

She’ll be continuing that conversation at our upcoming 2025 Annual Research & Treatment Conference, where she will deliver a plenary session drawing from her decades of experience in the field. Dr. Benson brings not only clinical expertise, but a long-standing commitment to justice and rehabilitation, making her an essential voice in our work to prevent sexual harm.

Her example reminds us that leadership often means engaging directly—and constructively—when it matters most.
