ATSA Board of Directors Job Descriptions 2023
The Call for Nominations is now closed.
The ATSA leadership consists of an Executive Board of Directors who bring a range of expertise to guide and provide governance for the association in fulfilling its mission and provide vision and support for the Executive Director and ATSA associates.
Nominations are being accepted for the following elected positions:
President-Elect
Term of Position
The President’s term on the Executive Board of Directors is four years. One year in the role of President-Elect, two years in the role of President, and one year in the role of Past President (2023-2026).
Position Description
The President is elected to the Executive Board of Directors by the ATSA membership. The President serves as the chair of the Governance and Executive committees and the Executive Board of Directors.
Specific duties include:
- Adheres to the Executive Board of Director’s job description and Code of Ethics;
- Assists the President;
- Chairs the Strategic Planning Committee as needed,
- Consults with the Executive Director to select the conference chair for the next year’s conference
- Serves as president in the absence of the President or in the event of his/her inability or refusal to act
President (2024-2025)
- Governs the Executive Board of Directors, chairing all Board meetings;
- Guides policy development and implementation;
- Responds to the concerns of the membership;
- Liaises with the membership and communicates decisions of the Executive Board of Directors;
- Writes the President’s Column in each issue of the ATSA Forum;
- Identifies organizational priorities and governance concerns;
- Supports and furthers the mission of ATSA;
- Works collaboratively with Executive Board of Directors members;
- Ensures that all Executive Board members fully perform their functions adequately;
- Ensures new members of the Executive Board of Directors receive appropriate information to fully participate on the Executive Board of Directors and are assigned mentors;
- Works with selected Executive Board of Directors members to evaluate the performance of the Executive Director;
- Works closely with the Executive Director, and serves as a “sounding board”, an advisor, mentor, and partner for the Executive Director;
- Works with the Executive Director and Treasurer to ensure that the Association is meeting all fiduciary responsibilities;
- Assists in fundraising activities;
- Chairs the Strategic Planning Committee;
- Assists the Conference Planning Committee;
- Selects the conference chair for the next year’s conference in consultation with the ATSA Executive Director;
- Presides over the Annual Conference;
- Ensures organizational practices are consistent with policies
- Assists the Board in periodically updating and clarifying the primary areas of focus for the Executive Board of Directors based on the strategic plan;
- Ensures policies are reviewed and updated;
- Ensures Executive Board of Directors processes are efficient;
- Leads the Executive Board of Directors through the nominations process.
Past President (2026)
- Assists the President;
- Chairs the Strategic Planning Committee as needed;
- Serves as President in the absence of the President or in the event of his/her inability or refusal to act.
Qualifications
A candidate for President on the ATSA’s Executive Board of Directors is an ATSA member in good standing, someone who is dynamic and passionate about ATSA and has developed goals on how to move the organization forward and expand the organization’s strategic plan. A candidate must possess strong leadership as well as collaborative teamwork skills. They also must have the ability to collaborate with and the willingness to work within the committee and board structure, the ATSA Executive Director, and ATSA staff members to promote ATSA’s strategic plan and mission.
Ideal candidates will have the following:
- Experience monitoring and updating strategic plans
- Meeting facilitation skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience working with nonprofit boards and volunteer committees
Adult Clinical Representative
Term of Position
The Adult Clinical Representative’s term on the Executive Board of Directors is three years (2023 -2025).
Position Description
The Adult Clinical Practice Representative is elected to the Executive Board of Directors by the membership.
The Representative serves as the Chair of the Adult Clinical Committee and oversees ATSA’s strategic goals and objectives related to clinical work with adults.
The Adult Clinical Representative:
- Adheres to the Executive Board of Director’s job description and ATSA’s Code of Ethics;
- Oversees the publication of key ATSA documents related to clinical work with adults who have sexually offended;
- Ensures careful consideration of issues relevant to clinical practice with this population in ATSA Executive Board of Directors discussions and decision making;
- Ensures that ATSA’s treatment and policy statements represent best practice based on research-informed clinical practices;
- Assists in developing tools or strategies to support clinical learning and practice for members and non-members;
- Works closely with other ATSA committees such as Public Policy, Research, Education and Training, and Membership;
- Promotes treatment and develops resources to support clinicians and non-professionals;
- Manages a budget related to committee activities.
Qualifications
Candidates for the Adult Clinical Practice Position are a clinician and ATSA member in good standing. Candidates are individuals excited and passionate about treatment and have extensive clinical experience in evidence-based and other research-informed practices involving the assessment and/or treatment of adults who have sexually offended. Candidates require experience with clinical supervision, program development or oversight, and/or the provision of training/education pertaining to adults who have sexually offended.
Ideal candidates will have the following:
- Sound understanding of current research pertaining to adults who have sexually offended and the associated applications/implications for assessment and treatment practices with this population;
- Practice experience in correctional, inpatient, or outpatient mental health and/or community-based settings;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong leadership skills;
- A spirit of collaboration and willingness to work with the committee(s) and board structure and with the ATSA Executive Director and office to address and promote ATSA’s mission and vision.
Student Representative
Term of Position
The Student Representative’s term on the Executive Board of Directors is three years (2023-2025).
Position Description
The Student Representative is elected to the Executive Board of Directors by student members of ATSA only. The Student Representative is responsible for ensuring that all of ATSA’s projects are informed by and reflect the needs of students in the field of sexual abuse.
The Student Representative also shares responsibilities of reviewing the programs and services offered by ATSA, and ensuring they meet the stated goals and objectives of ATSA’s strategic plan.
The Student Representative:
- Adheres to the Executive Board of Director’s job responsibilities and ATSA’s Code of Ethics;
- Facilitates communication between the ATSA Student membership, Executive Board of Directors, and the ATSA office;
- Facilitate discussion and networking among ATSA students;
- Recruits and matches students to participate on an ATSA committee;
- Develops unique content for students at the ATSA conference;
- Participates on one ATSA committee.
Qualifications
Candidates for the Student Representative position are full-time Student ATSA members in good standing. Candidates are individuals who are dynamic and passionate about ATSA and are interested in working on a nonprofit board and volunteer committees.
Ideal Candidates Will Have the Following:
- Strong social networking skills;
- Experience working on ATSA’s committees;
- Knowledge of multi-media communication strategies;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong leadership skills; and
- a spirit of collaboration and willingness to work with the committee(s) and board structure and with the ATSA Executive Director and office to address and promote ATSA’s mission and vision.

At-Large International Representative
Term of Position
The At-Large International Representative’s term on the Executive Board of Directors in three years (2023 -2025).
Position Description
The At-Large International Representative is appointed to the Executive Board of Directors by the Board. All voting ATSA members who do not reside in the United States are eligible to have their names put forward for nomination.
The At-Large International Representative serves as the Chair of the International Committee and oversees ATSA’s strategic goals and objectives related to broadening ATSA’s knowledge and perspective on world issues and increased international collaboration.
The At-Large International Representative:
- Adheres to the Executive Board of Director’s job description and ATSA’s Code of Ethics,
- Provides direct communication to international members to better fulfill their membership needs;
- Informs the Executive Board of Directors of current trends related to prevention, practice, and policy from an international perspective;
- Liaises with international members to inform them of current trends related to prevention, practice, and policy in the United States;
- Fosters opportunities to collaborate on joint projects and initiatives with international stakeholders;
- Works with other ATSA committees such as Public Policy, Membership, Adult Practice, and Child and Adolescent Practice committees;
- Assists with increasing the overall visibility and profile of ATSA to expand the organization’s reach to a broad range of stakeholders;
- Manages a budget related to committee activities.
Qualifications
Candidates for the At-Large International Representative are ATSA members in good standing who reside outside of the United States. Candidates are individuals who are dynamic and passionate about ATSA and have skills fostering relationships across diverse cultures and professional groups.
Ideal Candidates Will Have the Following:
- Experience with non-profit organizations or as part of a non-profit Board of Directors;
- Knowledge of multi-media communication strategies;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong leadership skills; and
- a spirit of collaboration and willingness to work with the committee(s) within the ATSA board structure and with the ATSA Executive Director and office to address and promote ATSA’s mission and vision.
Membership Representative
Term of Position
The Membership Representative’s term on the Executive Board of Directors is three years (2023 -2025).
Position Description
The Membership Representative is appointed to the Executive Board of Directors by the Board. All eligible voting members of ATSA may be nominated for an appointment.
The Representative serves as the Chair of the Membership Committee and oversees ATSA’s strategic goals and objectives related to ATSA’s membership recruitment and retention.
The Membership Representative:
- Adheres to the Executive Board of Director’s job description and ATSA’s Code of Ethics;
- Oversees the monitoring and management of membership trends;
- Ensures the implementation of strategies to encourage membership retention;
- Develops and is key to implementing key marketing strategies to highlight
- membership benefits;
- Ensures the Executive Board of Directors gives careful consideration to the impact on the membership of Executive Board of Director deliberations and decision-making;
- Works closely with other ATSA committees such as Chapter Leadership and Development and the Executive committee to develop and implement membership engagement on local, national, and international levels;
- Assists in monitoring the speed and accuracy of the membership application process;
- Liaises with members to enable smooth communication between the ATSA membership, the ATSA Executive Board, and the ATSA office;
- Assists with increasing the overall visibility and profile of ATSA to expand the organization’s reach to a broad range of stakeholders;
- Manages a budget related to committee activities.
Qualifications
Candidates for the Membership Representative are ATSA members in good standing. Candidates are individuals excited and passionate about ATSA and enjoy the collaboration and outreach of working with a large membership with diverse needs.
Ideal Candidates Will Have the Following:
- Experience in recruitment and retention of membership with non-profit associations;
- Knowledge of multimedia communication strategies and marketing tools;
- Knowledge of branding and marketing;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Strong leadership skills; and
- A spirit of collaboration and willingness to work within the committee and board;
