VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The New York State of Mental Health (OMH), Division of Forensic Services, Bureau of Sex Offender Evaluation and Treatment is recruiting to fill Psychiatric Examiner (Psychologist) positions in various locations throughout New York State.

Psychiatric Examiners (Psychologist) conduct psychiatric evaluations of individuals who are statutorially referred for civil management consideration under the Sex Offender Management and Treatment Act (SOMTA).  Incumbents review records, conduct and interpret actuarial risk assessments, complete clinical face-to-face interviews, generate reports and provide expert testimony in court for evaluations relative to assissting in the determination of the presence of a mental abnormality and whether civil confinement or intensive community supervision and treatment is appropriate, annual evaluations concerning the need for continued confinement, and determination of the level of dangerousness in identified community treatment cases.  Incumbents work as part of a clinical team and interface with staff at OMH and other State and local agency personnel.

A comprehensive compensation and benefits package, including paid leave (vacation, sick and personal), individual and family health care coverage (medical, dental and vision), and membership in the NYS Employees' Retirement System is available.

Minimum Qualfications:

Candidates must have a current New York State license and registration to practice psychology and have two years experience with the forensic population or one year experience with the sex offender population OR have one year permanent experience in a New York State agency as a Licensed Psychologist.

There is currently no Civil Service eligible list for Psychiatric Examiner (Psychologist), Grade 27. Therefore, appointment to this title may be provisional.  Candidates appointed provisionally must take the next scheduled Civil Service examination for this title, and their score must be reachable on the resulting eligible list before they can be permanently appointed. Candidates who do not pass the examination or achieve a reachable score may not be retained. The next Civil Service exam for the Psychiatric Examiner (Psychologist) has not been scheduled.
