Special Commitment Center (SCC)Steilacoom, Washington The Special Commitment Center (SCC) Forensic Services Unit located in Steilacoom, WA is offering an advanced one year postdoctoral fellowship through the University of Washington, School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. The SCC is the first established civil commitment facility for sexually violent predators (SVPs) in the country. SCC Evaluator Psychologists prepare and submit annual review reports to the Court regarding a resident's treatment progress, whether the individual's risk to re-offend has changed, and whether the individual is ready to move to a less restrictive alternative placement. The program, operated by the Department of Social and Health Services, is housed on McNeil Island. This fellowship is located on the mainland in Steilacoom, just outside of Tacoma approximately one hour south of Seattle. Regular travel to McNeil Island via ferry is required (travel time is part of working, paid, hours). The focus of the training is comprehensive assessment, including risk assessment and psychological testing, but opportunities to participate in treatment exist. A portion of time devoted to research on related topics is provided. A specific start date at the beginning of September 2008 is negotiable. The selected fellow will receive a stipend of approximately $37,000 with benefits. Funding for conference attendance is also available. The application process is open until filled.
